Key Takeaways

  • Treatment: Satricabtagene autoleucel, called satri-cel or CT041, uses the patient’s own modified immune cells to target claudin-18 isoform 2 (CLDN18.2).

  • Condition: Advanced gastric or gastro-oesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma, a cancer of the stomach or the area where it meets the food pipe.

  • Availability in China: Approved for a defined indication; the receiving hospital must confirm acceptance.

  • Location: A specialist centre with verified satri-cel qualification and arrangements for international patients.

  • Estimated cost: An individual written quotation is required. The provisional budget in the cost table remains VERIFY.

  • Eligibility: CLDN18.2-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative disease after failure of at least two prior treatment lines, with fitness confirmed by the treating team.

  • Important: A positive test does not guarantee suitability or benefit. Worsening disease during preparation can prevent treatment.

Introduction

CAR-T for stomach cancer in China is an approved option for a defined group of patients; CAR-T stands for chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. Before travelling, families need to confirm the cancer’s test results, the patient’s fitness, an appropriate treatment centre and a realistic plan for time and cost. Treatment does not work for everyone, and disease can progress while the patient’s cells are being prepared.

Who Is Eligible for CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China?

The approved indication is advanced CLDN18.2-positive, HER2-negative gastric or GEJ adenocarcinoma after at least two prior treatment lines have failed. Ask the oncologist to list each treatment regimen and why it stopped; treatment cycles are not separate treatment lines.

China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) announced the approval on 22 June 2026. Government reporting identifies satri-cel as the first CAR-T therapy approved for a solid tumour.

The receiving specialist must also assess whether the patient can tolerate cell collection, preparatory treatment and monitoring. Ask specifically about current symptoms, nutrition, blood counts, organ function, infection and how quickly the cancer is changing. Research protocols assess these issues, but the hospital must apply the current commercial prescribing information to the individual case.

What Benefit Should Families Realistically Expect?

The trial supports a period of improved disease control, with uncertainty about the overall-survival benefit. These results describe groups of patients and cannot predict an individual outcome.

Progression-free survival measures time until cancer worsens or the patient dies. A median describes the midpoint of a group’s results. Discuss whether the possible benefit fits the patient’s priorities, symptoms and ability to undergo treatment.

What Tests Are Needed Before CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China?

Start with complete CLDN18.2 and HER2 pathology reports, then let the receiving specialist identify any missing tests. Do not arrange another biopsy or ship tissue until the receiving laboratory confirms what it needs.

CLDN18.2 is assessed in tumour tissue using immunohistochemistry (IHC), which shows protein staining. A sequencing report alone does not establish this staining result. For HER2, an equivocal IHC result needs in situ hybridisation (ISH) to help establish the final status; fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) is one form of ISH.

Test or record

What to provide

Why it matters / source

CLDN18.2 IHC

Full report showing the assay, staining intensity, percentage of tumour cells stained, and specimen date and site

Supports the receiving laboratory's interpretation of the result.

HER2 testing

IHC score and any ISH result; an IHC score of 2+ needs clarification with ISH

Equivocal staining alone does not establish a negative result.

Original pathology

Diagnosis, biopsy or operation report, and information about available tissue blocks or unstained slides

Helps confirm tumour type and whether existing material can support further testing.

Current disease assessment

Recent scan reports and the original scan files, treatment history and a current symptom summary

Helps the hospital assess disease burden and fitness.

Clinical tests

Available blood counts, liver and kidney tests, infection screening and other tests requested by the specialist

The hospital determines the required tests and how recent they must be.

Does CLDN18.2 Positivity Automatically Mean Eligibility?

No. The assay, staining threshold and the rest of the clinical assessment all matter. Different studies use different definitions of “positive.”

Used a different threshold: at least 75% of tumour cells with moderate-to-strong staining. This is not the proportion eligible for satri-cel.

Also send any other biomarker reports already available. The review should consider appropriate alternatives, particularly when the current pathology or the patient’s condition does not support satri-cel.

What Should We Put in the Case-Review Folder?

Send a complete, dated record of the diagnosis and treatment so the hospital can identify gaps before travel.

Include pathology and biomarker reports; recent scans and original imaging files; a list of previous regimens with dates, response and reasons for stopping; current medicines and allergies; recent laboratory results; and a short summary of eating, weight change, symptoms and daily activity. Keep the original-language documents alongside any translations, and ask the receiving team which documents need certified translation. This is a preparation checklist; the accepting hospital will confirm its own requirements.

Confirm Eligibility Before You Book Flights

Before you book flights, confirm eligibility: send the CLDN18.2 and HER2 pathology report for a Preliminary Case Review and get matched with up to 3 authorised hospitals.

ChinaCureLink reviews the diagnosis, pathology, biomarkers and previous treatments, identifies suitable treatment paths for specialist assessment, and helps match the case with up to three relevant Chinese hospitals and specialists before any travel decision. Matching depends on medical suitability, verified product qualification and hospital acceptance.

Start with the medical enquiry form and request instructions for submitting your pathology reports.

How Can International Patients Access CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China, Step by Step?

Access should move from records review to verified hospital acceptance, then to a written treatment plan and travel arrangements. Chinese product approval does not establish an available appointment or treatment place for a particular international patient.

  1. Review the records remotely. Confirm the diagnosis, biomarkers, previous treatment lines and current clinical condition. Identify missing pathology or scans before paying for travel.

  2. Verify the hospital and product route. Check the hospital’s licence and its current qualification for satri-cel. Ask whether the proposed care uses the approved commercial product or a research protocol.

  3. Obtain a written plan. Request the proposed treatment sequence, estimated dates, itemised fees, payment and cancellation terms, and confirmation that the hospital can accept an international patient. Complete any insurer pre-authorisation.

  4. Confirm the cell-collection arrangements. The team decides where collection can occur and checks fitness again. Leukapheresis collects blood cells from which the patient’s T cells are prepared.

  5. Plan care during manufacturing. The oncologist may prescribe bridging therapy to control the cancer while the cells are prepared. Coordinate this with the home oncologist; do not stop or change treatment independently.

  6. Reassess before treatment. The hospital checks continued suitability and product release. Preparatory chemotherapy, called lymphodepletion, precedes infusion under the treating team’s plan.

  7. Complete monitoring and the return-home handover. Obtain the observation plan, emergency contact details, discharge information and follow-up responsibilities. The clinical team decides when travel home is appropriate.

How Do We Check That a Hospital Is Authorised?

Verify both the hospital’s licence and its qualification for the specific satri-cel product. Ask to see the current list of qualified institutions published by the product’s marketing authorisation holder.

Shanghai’s CAR-T rules require its marketing authorisation holders to assess collection and treatment institutions, arrange training and quality agreements, and publish qualified-institution lists. This is relevant to satri-cel’s Shanghai-based authorisation holder. It is not a single national accreditation proving that any hospital can administer every CAR-T product.

Ask the hospital to confirm the named product, collection and infusion locations, supervising clinical team, and how it manages serious complications. Verify international-patient acceptance and an available treatment slot directly with the receiving team.

Why Can a Patient Lose the Opportunity During the Wait?

The cancer can worsen between assessment and infusion, even after cells have been collected. Ask what treatment and monitoring will continue while manufacturing proceeds, and what the alternative care plan is if infusion becomes unsuitable.

How Long Does CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China Take, and What Does It Cost?

The accepting hospital must confirm the total stay and an individual satri-cel quotation. The trip needs to account for assessment, cell collection, manufacturing, preparatory treatment, infusion, observation and recovery.

How Should We Plan the Time Away From Home?

Use trial timing only as context, and request current dates from the hospital.

Ask whether the patient must remain near the centre while cells are prepared, whether repeat treatment is anticipated, and how a longer recovery would affect accommodation and caregiver arrangements. Obtain the documents needed to check entry requirements for the patient’s passport and expected stay. Keep the return booking flexible until the team confirms that travel is appropriate.

What Should a Stomach Cancer CAR-T Cost China Quotation Include?

Request an itemised quote naming satri-cel and stating exactly what is included. A general CAR-T estimate cannot establish the final cost of this product.

The quote should identify pathology review, additional tests, collection, manufacturing, bridging therapy if prescribed, lymphodepletion, infusion, hospital care, medicines, follow-up and management of complications. Ask which charges remain payable if the patient cannot proceed.

Request a dated quote in its billing currency. If comparing it with a home-currency budget, record the conversion date and bank charges separately.

What Should Families Check With Their Insurer?

Seek written pre-authorisation for the named product and hospital before making a financial commitment. Declare that the purpose of travel is treatment, and ask about complications, intensive care, evacuation and follow-up after returning home.

What Are the Risks and Side Effects of CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China?

Inflammatory reactions, low blood counts, infection and digestive complications require specialist monitoring. Treatment takes place in a centre equipped to recognise and manage serious deterioration.

Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) is an excessive inflammatory response. It can cause fever, a rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure and difficulty breathing. The team monitors for it and provides treatment when needed; severe reactions can be life-threatening.

Some serious complications can be fatal. The team should also explain infection precautions, stomach-lining injury or bleeding, and neurological warning signs. New confusion, unusual sleepiness or speech changes require urgent assessment. Risks described for CAR-T generally should not be mistaken for a product-specific satri-cel frequency.

When Should We Contact Our Doctor About CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China?

Keep the home oncologist involved during planning and after returning, and report worsening symptoms promptly. During treatment in China, use the receiving hospital’s clinical contact arrangements.

Seek urgent medical assessment for fever or chills after treatment, new breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, unusual drowsiness or difficulty speaking. Tell the team that CAR-T treatment has been given or is being planned.

Severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling or inability to pass stool or gas can signal obstruction. Vomiting blood or having black, tarry stools also requires urgent medical attention.

For severe symptoms, seek local emergency care immediately and contact the treating centre. Do not wait for a facilitator’s reply or a routine appointment. Before returning home, arrange who will review blood tests, medicines, symptoms and follow-up scans.

How ChinaCureLink Can Help

ChinaCureLink starts with the medical case and helps coordinate an appropriate hospital assessment before travel. We are a Medebound HEALTH company, an independent medical facilitator and patient advocate, and we do not represent only one hospital.

“We don’t begin with the hospital. We begin with the medical case.”

Our role includes:

  • Case review: Reviewing the diagnosis, pathology, biomarkers and previous treatments to identify treatment paths for specialist assessment.

  • Hospital coordination: Helping match the case with up to three relevant Chinese hospitals and specialists, with product qualification and acceptance checked.

  • Online consultation before travel: Coordinating a discussion of suitability, alternatives, expected benefit and the proposed treatment plan.

  • Coordination support: Helping organise records, appointments, clarification of costs and communication about the transition home.

The treating hospital makes the final eligibility and treatment decisions. A preliminary review does not guarantee admission, infusion or benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Foreigners Get CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China?

Foreign patients need individual acceptance from a hospital qualified to provide satri-cel. The Chinese approval defines the medical indication, but does not confirm that a particular centre can accept an overseas patient. Obtain a written eligibility assessment, confirmation of current product-specific qualification, and a treatment and monitoring plan before booking travel.

Is Satri-Cel Available Outside China?

China’s marketing approval is confirmed. Satri-cel has also been studied outside China, but a research listing does not establish routine availability or an open treatment place. Ask your local oncologist to check current authorisation, recruitment or lawful special-access arrangements in your country. This guide does not confirm a commercial treatment route outside China.

Does Insurance Cover CAR-T for Stomach Cancer in China?

Coverage is policy-specific and should be confirmed in writing before payment. Ask about planned overseas treatment, the named satri-cel product and hospital, prior authorisation, complications, intensive care and medical evacuation. Chinese regulatory approval does not by itself establish insurance coverage. Ordinary travel insurance should not be assumed to cover a trip made for treatment.

What If My Stomach Cancer Is HER2-Positive?

HER2-positive stomach cancer falls outside the indication described in the NMPA satri-cel approval announcement. Ask your oncologist to review appropriate alternatives and whether an older or uncertain pathology result needs clarification. An equivocal HER2 immunohistochemistry result requires the appropriate follow-up testing; a facilitator should not reinterpret it as negative to arrange treatment.
